The story begins with Christo and Johanna obtaining a crystal key from an eccentric old man at an alien themed music and art festival in the Mojave desert of California. He instructs them to go to an abandoned underground government research facility a few miles from the festival grounds and use the key to activate a mysterious tower inside. There they wake up the tower's supercomputer and its General Artificial Intelligence Assistant, GAIA, and learn about an approaching solar coronal mass ejection super storm. They are told that the only way to protect human civilization on Earth from the oncoming shock wave is to collect the seven crystals of an alien orb scattered across the galaxy and unify their power to create a protective field around the planet.
